Dolores LaChance

Dolores LaChance often bridges the gap between our branch and the League of Women Voters. She lives in Saugerties, retired from her career as a teacher, and loves to travel.

Jean Semilof, Serving Our Community

Jean Semilof is gregarious, upbeat, and full of energy -- exactly what a membership co-chair needs to be.

A realtor by profession for over 3o years, Jean says she is currently devoting a great deal of energy to the Ulster County Board of Realtors' community service projects.

She says, "I believe strongly that realtors should give back to the community. Last year, I spearheaded a very successful coin drive to benefit the Helping Hands Soup Kitchen at the Clinton Avenue Methodist Church and I am currently involved in planning an upscale yard sale to benefit the STARS mentoring program at the Everette Hodge Center, which the AAUW Kingston Branch is also particpating in."

Jean is a past President of the Ulster County Board of Realtors and a REALTOR of the YEAR.

Meet Doris Licht, now practicing the art of managing our money

Doris is a ceramic artist and photographer who moved to West Hurley full time in 2002 to build the studio where she now works and offers small groups of students wheel throwing and hand building pottery classes.

She spent much of her career teaching ceramics, drawing, and photography at Hunter College and CCNY, and then on the Graduate Ceramics faculty at the Pratt Institute.

Doris grew up in Los Angeles where she attended Dorsey High School, which was famous for having the largest football field and the tiniest school building in the city of L.A. She attended Los Angeles City College where she majored in art and spent many afternoons lying on the lawn in front of the art building listening to Lord Buckley perform his monologues.

Doris also attended the Chouinard Art Institute and the Otis Art Institute where she studied Fine Art and developed her lifelong love of clay.

In addition to her work for AAUW, Doris serves as a member of the Hurley Conservation Advisory Council and as a trustee for the Maverick Concerts.

She writes memoir, provides Macintosh computer support, and is a new bridge player.

She was recently asked to become the treasurer of our Kingston AAUW branch for 2009-2010. She says she doesn’t know why, but we do.

From the Past: Arlene Bruck, AAUW Scholarship Winner

We know Arlene Bruck as our capable Diversity chairperson. However, Arlene’s first contact with AAUW was in 1963 when she received an AAUW scholarship upon graduation from Kingston High School. After college, she joined the Kingston branch.

She has contributed time, talent, and expertise over the years since.

She coordinated fundraisers for the Educational Foundation by organizing puppet shows, an evening at the Nutcracker Ballet, cocktail parties, a Renaissance Fair and international programs. Arlene chaired a committee that wrote and produced More Than Books, a film widely shown in the community advocating for the Library.

In the 70’s, AAUW recognized a lack of reporting on child abuse in local hospitals and schools. Arlene chaired a project that increased awareness and led improved reporting.

As president, 1995-96, Arlene promoted the AAUW Women In Math And Science Study through a Saturday conference and the branch held a well attended public panel on the ERA amendment.

Arlene was behind many of the recognition awards the branch received at the AAUW State Conventions -- raising child abuse awareness, the film, More than Book, the 1991 high school course Arlene and Mary Leonard wrote covering topics like Gender Equity, Women’s History, and the Holocaust. She receive a grant to study with the NYS Gender Equity Project.

Arlene has seen AAUW change from an organization of “white glove” sophisticates to one more liberal and feminist. Locally, we’ve aged.

Today, under Arlene’s leadership, the Diversity Committee works closely with the KHS Guidance and ESL Departments. Our focus includes:

• Making refurbished computers available to needy students
• Providing holiday gift certificates to families
• Awarding an annual scholarship to a KHS graduate to recognize their work promoting understanding and camaraderie among diverse community groups

Arlene and notes that AAUW’s contributions have contributed to an improvement in both the graduation rate and the number of students going to college.

Irene Miller - Fighting for Clean Elections

Irene Miller has been fighting the good fight for Clean Money, Clean Elections. She is a founding member of NY Citizens for Clean Elections and on the board of directors of NY Democracy Project, also dedicated to passing Clean Money, Clean Elections.

She gained state-wide AAUW support when she presented a resolution at the 2008 NYS AAUW Convention. The resolution was resoundingly approved. We all recognize that when private interests fund campaigns, women lose.

And now Irene chairs the Kingston AAUW Branch public policy committee.

Irene is a retired medical writer, a graduate of Temple University, and a new student of the piano. She attends piano camp each summer and participates in the Ulster County Music Society.

Ruth Wahtera - Blah, Blah, Web 2.0

Ruth helps nonprofits tell their stories -- to funders, clients, donors, and the public. She writes grant applications, web content, and newsletters and often facilitates the strategic planning that lays out the steps an organization will take to accomplish their goals.

So, she spends long hours at the computer. That means she's always looking for the easiest, least expensive, and most fun ways to work on-line. Web 2.0.

She has introduced the branch to blogging, an enewsletter service, meeting wizard, and other new internet applications.

Ruth is passionate about women's issues (-- yes, you can call me a feminist any day!). Equity. Choice. Comparable worth. End abstinence-only funding. Human rights.

ViVi Hlavsa - Tireless Organizer

ViVi believes that you should make things happen. And she does. She is a past president of the branch, but that's just the tip of the iceberg!

She organizes the trips, One Book, One Community, hosts the picnics, plans and runs Potluck and a Film, and participates in many of the committees. And that's just AAUW. You can find her at many other events and organizations, as well.

Between meetings, she travels. Most recently to Australia and New Zealand where she met this snake.

Bernadette Carpino -- Dedicated AAUW Historian

Bernie joined AAUW in 1972 when she was teaching first grade. AAUW gave her an opportunity to interact with big people from other fields. She has always found the programs and projects to be stimulating.

Now retired, she loves reading and gardening. She's passionate about nature and the environment. She has twin grand-daughters, now thirteen, who live in Virginia. Bernie looks forward to the time they spend with her each year.

As branch historian, Bernie has written some wonderful articles for our newsletter that we hope to publish here on the blog. She keeps up our scrap books and continues to work on our oral history. She notes that she finds the social aspect of AAUW as important as AAUW's commitment to education.

Doris Goldberg - Inquiring Mind

Doris Goldberg is our most recent bride. Her husband is an AAUW member, too!

Doris is a physician with board certification in pediatrics and public health/preventive medicine. She retired from the NYC Department of Health and now invests much of her time "making art." She's an active member of the Woodstock Artists' Association and specializes in prints and portraits.

That's not where her creative streak ends, though. She loves music and story telling.

Doris is passionate about social justice and literacy. Her commitment to literacy has led her to a position on the Woodstock Library Board.

She joined AAUW for the great intellectual stimulation, the friendship, and the excellent trips.
